The poster for the December 2 event hosted by students enrolled in “The Nineteenth Century City” at the University of Alabama is now ready. My design skills are minimal, but I think it works.
Birmingham Southern University Associate Professor of History Victoria Ott is the guest speaker. Her talk is titled Her talk is titled “A Safe Place to Hide?: The Role of Female Academies in the Confederate South.”
The event, which will be held 4-5:30 pm in UA’s Gorgas house, will also feature a display of four posters filled with correspondence, photographs, report cards, diplomas and other documents. These documents unveil the ways in which young women attending institutions of higher learning figure into an urbanizing America.
A silent auction of student photography will also be presented. All proceeds benefit Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society and Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion. For a sneak preview of the photographs, visit our The Nineteenth Century City Class Silent Auction Slide Show Fall 2015 .
